Abraham Lincoln, The Sixteenth President Of The United

Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States, was assassinated on April 14, 1865 by a man named John Wilkes Booth. Many details from that night are well-known today such as the place and time, but not the motive behind it. One thing that is known for sure is that this particular event is now noted throughout American history as a major event. Many conspiracies have been made on Booth s original intentions behind his utter hatred and later the murder of the President. An accusation made by Jim Bishop says, ...it may be that Abraham Lincoln offended the actor by proclaiming, in the election of 1860, his intention of holding the union together against the wishes of the Southern secessionists. 1 When Lincoln was elected for†¦show more content†¦He then writes a letter to the editor of the National Intelligencer stating, in specific terms, what he is about to do. He signs his name, then adds those of Powell, Atzerodt, and Herold. They are all the members of the same company, in theatrical terms.2 That night, Booth met with Powell and Atzerodt and they all went over the plan of killing the three most important men in the Union government. They planned to kill the them at the same time, with Booth taking the responsibility of shooting Lincoln with his gun and then stabbing Grant with his knife. That night, while the play was being enacted on stage, Booth entered the theater, and made this way towards where President Lincoln was sitting. He came up from behind him and shot him in the back of his head. Booth then fled from the scene, leaving the President unconscious. Several doctors were on the scene and they tried to revive Lincoln but failed. They moved the injured President to a nearby house, where he lived out his last hours without ever recovering from the bullet wound.
